McAfee AntiVirus Plus Review – Is It That Good? (Detailed Review)

In this article we are going to share with you detailed McAfee Antivirus Plus Review. Read it until the end.

What Is McAfee AntiVirus?

If you’ve been using computers a long time, you know very well that you need to install antivirus protection on all your PCs.

But these days, you also need security (antivirus and more) on your Macs, and on your Android and iOS devices. Well, one license for McAfee AntiVirus Plus lets you install McAfee security software on every Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS device in your household.

That’s very cool! Yes, Windows users get a lot more features than those on other platforms, but it’s still quite a deal.

Founded more than 30 years ago, McAfee has grown into one of the largest cybersecurity companies around, with an expanding enterprise business, and a full range of consumer antivirus tools for all the major platforms.

McAfee AntiVirus Plus has a long list of features, including antivirus, malicious URL blocking, file shredding, PC speedup tools, anti-theft for mobile devices, and more. The package is available for PC, Mac, Android and iOS.

New features in this release start with a machine learning-based mobile antivirus engine, which should allow for faster detection of mobile threats.

A Performance module dynamically adjusts process and I/O priorities to optimize speeds, while a Web Boost Chrome extension reduces bandwidth usage by allowing users to prevent videos from automatically playing.

McAfee has enhanced its iOS app by porting a couple of previously Android-only features (network threat detection and blocking of malicious URLs), while the Android build gets the ability to monitor app data usage, and set limits.

There’s an unusual plus in McAfee’s ‘virus protection pledge’. If your computer gets a virus, a McAfee expert will remotely access your machine to remove it. If they can’t, you’ll get a full refund.

We would rather our antivirus didn’t allow us to get infected in the first place, but it’s good to know that help will be there if you need it.

McAfee AntiVirus Plus Setup

There’s no trial available for McAfee AntiVirus Plus, but the company does provide a 30-day build of its capable security suite, McAfee Total Protection.

That’s not ideal, but the core interface and technology is the same, and you can check out Total Protection’s extra features as well: these include a firewall, spam filter, password manager, parental controls, online storage, and more.

The trial is easy to find and set up. The installer downloads and installs its files without complaining about ‘incompatible’ software or hassling about options or settings. The setup program even minimizes itself to stay out of your way, and you can carry on with something else while it works.

When the interface finally appears, a series of popups highlight key areas of the UI and briefly explains what they do. It’s a useful guide which gets you up and running right away, but again you can dismiss it in a click if you know the program already.

A quick check with Task Manager revealed a surprising number of new McAfee-related background processes, as many as 19 in some situations.

That makes for higher than usual RAM use at around 200MB, but there was no significant CPU or disk usage when running in the background, and overall the package had no significant impact on our performance.

McAfee AntiVirus Plus protects a user’s devices in a number of different ways. First, it provides virus and malware protection.

McAfee AntiVirus Plus can scan your device on a regular basis for viruses and malware.

User’s set the virus scanning schedule and frequency. It can also scan in the background without interrupting computer use or it can scan during periods when the computers or devices are not typically being used.

When McAfee AntiVirus Plus finds a virus or any malware on a computer or device, it can help a user remove it.

It can also help protect users from introducing new viruses and malware onto their devices when browsing the internet or perusing email.

For example, it will warn a user of known risky and untrustworthy websites and of potentially harmful downloads before a computer or device is exposed to the possible threat. It also protects users from potentially dangerous email attachments.

In addition to virus and malware protection, McAfee AntiVirus Plus provides other security features.

The software will prevent individual devices from spreading viruses, malware, and spam to other computers and devices.

McAfee AntiVirus Plus can also help protect personal information by offering a feature that permanently deletes (wipes) files and data from computers and devices, making it impossible for hackers to un-delete the files and have access to personal or sensitive information.

McAfee AntiVirus Plus enables users to manage all of their devices from a secure online management console that can be accessed by logging into their online accounts.

From the management console, users can adjust and change settings for individual devices. McAfee AntiVirus Plus supports Windows and Mac-based computers and laptops, Android mobile devices, and iOS mobile devices. McAfee AntiVirus Plus offer free 24/7 support for as long as a user’s subscription is active.

McAfee AntiVirus Plus Features

Virus and Malware Protection

The world of viruses and malware (malicious software) continues to grow and has become increasingly complex. Computer hacking has expanded from a few malicious individuals or criminals to wide-spread organizations, governments, and even for-profit businesses.

The number and types of security threats have dramatically increased. Today, malware surfaces in a variety of shapes and size, including viruses, worms, rootkits, Trojans, spyware, adware, riskware, and the newest category: ransomware(where a computer is infected, and a fee is demanded before it will be returned to its original state).

McAfee AntiVirus Plus, is part of Intel’s security family of products and services, and is backed by years of experience and resources in the world of virus protection.

In addition to McAfee’s own dedicated resources, McAfee is part of a broader network of organizations and individuals who cooperate to identify, isolate, and protect the industry from the myriad of potential malware threats throughout the world.

By subscribing to the McAfee AntiVirus Plus service, users gain the benefits and protection of these many resources and players.

Permanent Deletion of Data

Some users may not be aware that when a standard operating system feature is used to delete files from a computer hard drive or from a portable storage device, the date in those files is not actually being completely deleted. Some or all of that data is often still on the hard drive but hidden from a user’s view.

Experienced hackers or even criminals using commercially available software can get to those files, undelete them and gain access to the data that the files contain.

As a protective measure, McAfee AntiVirus Plus offers a permanent delete feature for deleting files that may contain sensitive information and data from storage devices.

This permanent delete feature uses sophisticated technology that overwrites the file’s contents with random data that will replace the data in the original file. If hackers get the files they do not contain any personal or sensitive information.

The permanent delete feature helps users protect themselves from identify and information theft.

Multi-Device Solution

The McAfee AntiVirus Plus subscription protects an individual’s multiple computers and devices with a single account.

This means that an individual can use a single subscription to protect a desktop computer, laptop computer, tablet, and mobile phone. It should be noted that not all of the

McAfee AntiVirus Plus features are supported for all devices, so check to see what features and tools are available for the devices that are being used to avoid any surprises.

McAfee AntiVirus Plus supports Windows and Mac computers and laptops, Android devices (like tablets and mobile phones), and iOS devices (like iPads and iPhones).

For Android devices, McAfee AntiVirus Plus provides features like anti-theft, app privacy, data backup, and wireless network protection. For iOS devices, McAfee AntiVirus Plus provides file protection and anti-theft protection.

For Macs, it provides firewall and anti-malware protection and a set of “web safety tools.”

The anti-theft features for Android and iOS devices vary but usually include the ability to either disable or wipe clean stolen devices remotely (for instance, from the McAfee AntiVirus Plus cloud-based management console), so thieves are unable access any sensitive or personal data on the device.

Cloud-Based Management Console

Since the McAfee AntiVirus Plus service is cloud-based, this makes it possible for a user to manage the service on all of your devices from a secure McAfee AntiVirus Plus internet portal called the “management console.”

From the management console, a user can select and view each of the computers and devices that have been registered with the service. Users can also change and customize how the service works on each device from one location.

For example, new devices can be added and devices that are no longer in use can be deleted. Users can change settings on a single device, such as changing the frequency of virus scans on a computer.

Users can also update their McAfee AntiVirus Plus account information and handle other account activities, all from one console in the cloud.

No-Charge Technical Support

Included in the subscription to McAfee AntiVirus Plus, is free 24/7 support. The support service can be used to help a user install and start running the program or to help change settings. Support can also answer questions and is available via online chat or email.

In addition to technical support McAfee AntiVirus Plus also offers online documentation, tutorials, and a knowledgebase of information about how to use McAfee AntiVirus Plus on all supported devices.

McAfee and Intel also sponsor an online community where users can search for answers to questions and issues, as well as ask specific questions of the community.

Why Should You Pay For AntiVirus?

Many consumers choose freeware and it seems that freeware is becoming more and more popular.

How is McAfee going to compete with that and why is freeware gaining more popularity?

The fact that freeware or free antivirus software is indeed free is the biggest reason why it is gaining popularity, however there are a number of disadvantages to freeware solutions.

1. Most free antivirus software still rely on traditional updates. However in a world where the number of threats is growing at an ever increasing speed and is coming from multiple directions, real-time cloud-based security is becoming more and more of a necessity.

With free security software users may thus end up having to spend on costly clean up since they may not be protected from the latest threats.

2. Free security software focuses on providing protection against existing viruses and spyware however they often do not offer protection against: newest threats (Zero-Day Threats), phishing and dangerous websites.

3. Paid security software is generally more feature rich and thus more comprehensive, for example McAfee includes functionality like Firewall, data shredder, safe searching, mobile security, password manager, secure cloud storage, identity management etc.

In its consumer security products. With regards to free security software users need to install various products to obtain at least an acceptable level of protection, which means that they will need to learn, configure and maintain a number of different products, all with different interfaces and user experiences.

4. Free security solutions come with nagging in-product advertisements informing the consumer that they should buy more complete versions of the product that they are currently using. The freeware vendors thus indirectly admit that the free solutions do not offer sufficient protection.

5. Customer support in most cases is limited to an online FAQ and sometimes email, whereas McAfee offers free 24/7 support via phone as well as live chat.

How Does McAfee AntiVirus Software Work?

The Virus Database

To begin protecting your computer system, McAfee Antivirus software updates its virus database by using an automatic web crawler that scans the Internet and identifies malicious software by name, type and destructive capability.

With that information, the software also scans for the way to delete the malicious software.

Once the scan is complete, the program is prepared to impede the entry of malware on a computer system or destroy it, if it is already on the system.

The Firewall

Once the virus database is updated, McAfee Antivirus software strengthens a computer’s firewall.

Some antivirus software isn’t equipped to keep out all threats—especially new and complex threats—because all software doesn’t perform a search that is thorough enough to identify and handle the Internet’s new threats.

This is not the case with McAfee Antivirus software, and this is also why the firewall is nearly impenatrable.

Nothing can enter your computer system without you letting it in, and a warning is issued whenever there is a perceived threat. The firewall on some versions of McAfee even extends to the Internet, so you are notified about harmful websites while you surf the web.

If, by accident, you allow a virus or a worm past the firewall and into your system by downloading an infected program or opening a corrupted email attachment, the last line of defense is the virus scan tool, which finds and kills or contains malware for manual deletion.

The Virus Scan Utility

The virus scan utility searches every file on your computer system for malware and compiles a list of malicious software that you can delete at the end of the scan.

Most antivirus software has this utility, but as mentioned in the previous sections, the scans performed by other software are only as effective as their virus databases allow them to be.

The depth of McAfee Antivirus’s database permits the program to detect and eliminate most threats quickly with a thorough scan. With each of the tools that McAfee Antivirus software has at its disposal, your computer should always be malware-proof.
